Skeletal (or “skel”) trailers are a low tare weight, high-payload trailers. With a strong trailer frame or “skeleton”, you get a lightweight trailer that’s versatile and easy to drive and manoeuvre.
They can be specified in a large number of size configurations, such as:
- 20-foot container
- 30-foot container
- 40-foot container
- 45-foot container
- ISO intermodal container
They usually have between four and twelve container twist locks, so drivers can load a range of different configurations (e.g. 2x 20-foot or 1x 40-foot).
Provide a Good Base
A skel trailer’s main purpose is to provide the necessary underpinnings for a container. These work to secure containers and keep them in their place as long as possible.
The underpinnings vary in size and are applied along the trailer as anchors, handling the locks and other securing mechanisms as required. This helps to keep containers intact and secure, preventing them from toppling. The underpinnings also help prevent other handling problems from being a threat.
Suitable for a Variety of Loads
Skel trailers are used and trusted by many because of how well they handle loads in various sizes. Individual trailers can handle loads from 20, 30 or even 45 feet in length, along with unusual container sizes.
These trailers are versatile as they can weigh as little as 4000kg using medium-tensile or lightweight high-tensile steel, meaning more load can be carried on fewer axles and tyres, subject to static rollover thresholds not being exceeded, meaning less fuel is wasted.
Works with Axles and Brakes
These trailers come with their own added axles and brakes to keep them functional. They can be specified with two, three and four axles, using single or dual wheels and either disc or drum brakes. A self-track rear axle will be fitted on a quad trailer (four axles) to reduce tyre wear.
